Kinard Core Knowledge Junior High School
Fort Collins, CO
This new two-story prototype Junior High is designed for 750 students. The building was constructed under several sustainable building guidelines and incorporates many energy-efficient and environmentally friendly elements. Some of these design criteria are the geo-thermal, vertical well field system for heating and cooling, three inches of spray polyurethane foam insulation inside the wall cavities, daylighting, low energy indirect lighting and lighting controls and numerous materials were used with recycled content and environmentally friendly production methods. To help conserve water, the school is xeriscaped with drought tolerant grasses and plantings. According to the District, Kinard Junior High is modeled to have operating costs of $0.27/SF which is about half of what similarly sized schools are costing the District to operate. Though not LEED-Certified, the building meets the requirements necessary to have reached the Silver certification level as outlined by the US Green Building Council. An Energy Star® Qualified building.
